Manage WebCT Files Using Drag & Drop
(WebDAV Folders)
Overview
WebCT 4.0 and higher supports the Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) protocol which offers WebCT designers the convenience of drag and drop file management. WebDAV will enable you to access and manage WebCT course files directly through Windows or Macintosh folders.
Setting Up WebDAV with Windows XP
(instructions are similar for Windows 2000)

- From your myWebCT page, click the WebDAV info button. The WebDAV Info page appears.

- From your WebDAV Info page, highlight the URL for the course and folder you want local access to-Course Files in most cases -and copy the URL. Make sure that you do not highlight extra space beyond the "/".

- From your Windows desktop, double-click My Network Places. Alternatively, you may click the My Network Places link in the Task Pane of any open window.

The My Network Places folder should open.
- From your My Network Places folder, double-click the Add Network Places icon...OR...click the Add a network place link in the task pane.

The Welcome to the Add Network Place Wizard appears. Click Next.
- Select the Choose another network location option and click Next.
- In the Internet or network address: text box, paste your WebDAV folder URL. Again, make sure that there are no trailing spaces after the URL. Click Next.

- When prompted, enter your WebCT ID and Password. Important: If you are sharing a computer, you should deselect the Remember this password (or Save this password) option. Click OK.
- Type a name for the network place. Use something that clearly indicates to which course this WebDAV folder is associated.
- The Completing the Add Network Place Wizard screen appears. Click the Finish button to add the network place. If you checked the option to open the network place, a new folder should appear which contains the files for this course.
- You can view, manage, move, copy, save, and rename the files and folders on your WebCT server just as you would perform the same actions in file manager. However, when you view the WebCT course contents in your Web folder, you see a list of files and folders and their associated Internet addresses or URLs.
- Note: When using WebDAV with Windows XP, you may have to enter your WebCT username and password multiple times.

- From your myWebCT page, click the WebDAV info link. The WebDAV Info page appears.
- From your WebDAV info page, select the URL for the course and folder you want local access to-Course Files or Course Backups-and copy the URL. Tip: The URL will begin with http
- Open My Computer then open Web Folders.
- Select Add a Web Folder.
- For location, paste your WebCT folder URL.
- When prompted for a User Name and Password enter your WebCT ID and Password. Important: If you are sharing a local computer you should deselect the Save this password in your password list check box.
- In the Network Place text box, enter a name.
- To complete your WebDAV setup, click Finish. A Microsoft Web Folder appears containing your WebCT course files.
- You can view, manage, move, copy, save, and rename the files and folders on your WebCT server just as you would perform the same actions in file manager. However, when you view the WebCT course contents in your Web folder, you see a list of files and folders and their associated Internet addresses or URLs.
Setting Up WebDAV with MacOS X (using the Finder)
WebDAV is integrated into MacOS X. This makes it very simple to mount a WebDAV directory just as you would any other volume. In short, it allows you to mount your course's Manage Files or Backups and use the Finder's file management system to move and edit files.
Note: If you are experiencing problems modifying files or folders using OS X native WebDAV, you should upgrade to OS X 10.2.
- From your myWebCT, click the WebDAV info link. The WebDAV Info page appears.
- From your WebDAV info page, select the URL for the course and folder you want local access to: Course Files or Course Backups.
- Copy the URL. Tip: The URL will begin with http
- From the Finder click Apple-K or use the menu item GO > CONNECT TO SERVER.
- MacOS X's "Connect to Server" window will open. In the "Address:" textbox, paste the URL that you copied in step 3. Click the CONNECT button.
- When prompted, enter your WebCT designer User Name and Password.
- Your directory will now be mounted. Depending on your Finder preferences, it may display on your desktop or be accessible through the Finder.
- You can view, manage, move, copy, save, and rename the files and folders on your WebCT server just as you would perform the same actions in file manager. However, when you view the WebCT course contents in your Web folder, you see a list of files and folders and their associated Internet addresses or URLs.
